Roy Hodgson reveals his true feelings on Marc Guehi’s failed Liverpool transfer

Roy Hodgson has given his thoughts on Marc Guehi’s failed £35million transfer from Crystal Palace to Liverpool, which collapsed on deadline day.

The England international was expected to join the Reds on the final day of the transfer window, to the point that Marc Guehi’s goodbye video to Crystal Palace fans was recorded.

A £35million deal had been agreed between Steve Parish and Liverpool, although that was to the fury of Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner, who has already lost Eberechi Eze this summer to Arsenal.

TBR Football exclusively revealed that Glasner himself stopped Guehi from being sold, as he convinced the club chairman not to do the deal.

Roy Hodgson feels ‘really sorry’ for Marc Guehi

Having managed both Liverpool and Crystal Palace, Hodgson has a better understanding than most about how each club operates behind the scenes.

During an appearance on TalkSPORT, Hodgson admitted that Guehi is “the person I feel really sorry for,” after the transfer collapsed at the final hurdle.

“If right at the beginning it had been made clear his task ahead would be to stay at Crystal Palace and there’d be no question he’d be leaving in the transfer window, then I’m sure he would have got his head around that.

“But having been led to believe sooner or later a deal would be done between the clubs, I guess that his head for the last period of time has been he was going to move. He’s the loser in the situation.”

Hodgson believes Crystal Palace are the ultimate “winners” due to keeping hold of Guehi until at least January, bolstering their defensive options.

However, the veteran manager stressed that it will depend on “how upset he may have been” over the situation.

Marc Guehi’s failed transfer also impacted Chelsea

Liverpool weren’t the only Premier League outfit to be stung by Guehi’s failure to leave Selhurst Park this summer; it also impacted Chelsea.

Chelsea had been set to pocket £7million from his proposed sale to Arne Slot’s side due to a 20% sell-on clause that they negotiated with the Eagles when they sold Guehi to Crystal Palace in 2021.

Chelsea sold Guehi for £18million and had an agreement on matching rights in place, meaning they would have been fully aware of any negotiations for the central defender.

The Blues could have then matched the offer and made a last-minute bid, but despite Chelsea’s interest in Guehi at the start of the year, that didn’t happen.

However, with Guehi likely to leave Crystal Palace on a free transfer at the end of this season, it’s unlikely that the Blues will ever gain any finances.
