How much cash Chelsea miss out on after Crystal Palace cancel Marc Guehi to Liverpool

A Chelsea academy graduate was the focal point of transfer deadline day as Liverpool attempted to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace.

A £35m deal had been agreed between Steve Parish and Liverpoolleaving Oliver Glasner furious – as Crystal Palace opted to take the money before the defender’s contract expires at the end of the season.

However, Glasner fought to keep Guehi and ultimately convinced Parish to veto the agreement.

Chelsea – who sold the England international to Crystal Palace back in July 2021 – had a 20% cut of that £35m fee thanks to a clause, so this deal collapsing has cost the Blues millions.

Chelsea miss out on £7m and are now unlikely to see any income from sell-on clause

When selling Guehi to Crystal Palace for £18m in July 2021, the Blues negotiated a 20% sell-on clause of any future sale.

It means the £35m move would have secured Chelsea a sum of £7m had it gone through.

Now – however – Crystal Palace are likely to lose Guehi on a free transfer in the summer of 2026, which means there will be no fee for Chelsea to take a cut of.

Chelsea could have made an attempt to sign Marc Guehi on deadline day

In addition to negotiating a sell-on clause during those 2021 talks with Crystal Palace, Chelsea also agreed on matching rights.

That means the Blues would have to be kept informed if another club made a bid for Guehi, giving them the right to match it if they chose to do so.

Therefore, Crystal Palace were presumably in contact with Chelsea as well as Liverpool on deadline day, although Enzo Maresca clearly decided he had no need for the 25-year-old.

Chelsea had shown interest in Guehi earlier in 2025 – so perhaps those at Stamford Bridge will have a look at signing their academy graduate on a free transfer next summer, or for a low fee in January.
