It’s been a roaring start to life on Tyneside for Newcastle star Nick Woltemade after his mega-money move from Stuttgart over the summer.
The giant striker came in with doubts over his ability to fit seamlessly into Eddie Howe’s plans, being labelled as a ‘one-season wonder’ thanks to his exploits at Stuttgart last season.
Woltemade came through the ranks at Werder Bremen, but only scored two goals in 48 games for his hometown club, before excelling at Stuttgart with 17 goals in 33 games in all competitions.
It’s seen him called up to the German national team, and his move to Newcastle has only furthered that development.
So much so, that with Woltemade’s goal against Northern Ireland on Monday night for his country, he’s broken a record that no Newcastle player has achieved this century.

Nick Woltemade made Newcastle history as their first player to score for Germany this century
Incredibly, Woltemade became just Newcastle’s sixth player from Germany in their history.
One of that sextuple is Malick Thiaw, who also joined this summer, whilst Loris Karius left last summer.
Even more amazingly, they are the only three German players to play for Newcastle in the 21st century. The most recent was Dietmar (Didi) Hamann, who left the club in July 1999.
During his time at St. James’ Park, the former Liverpool star scored for his country – incidentally against Northern Ireland – before moving to Anfield.
As a result, Woltemade is the first Newcastle player to score for Germany since the new millennium, though he’ll have to wait until his next cap to be the first Deutschland star to complete the feat against someone else other than the Green and White Army.

Nick Woltemade is proving his Newcastle doubters wrong and he could mirror Alexander Isak’s success
Regardless of Woltemade’s exploits at club level, it highlights the club’s growth over the past few years since their takeover.
It wasn’t long ago that Newcastle’s top goalscorer in the league was Jonjo Shelvey in the 2019-20 season – and at that point, he hadn’t made an England cap in five years.
| Player | Premier League goals for Newcastle, 2019-20 |
|---|---|
| Jonjo Shelvey | 6 |
| Dwight Gayle | 4 |
| Miguel Almiron | 4 |
| Allan Saint-Maximin | 3 |
To have Germany’s starting and goalscoring striker in their team is a sign of their progression.
It also puts Bayern Munich president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge to shame after calling Newcastle ‘idiots’ for paying a high price for Woltemade.
Already on three goals in the Premier League, he’s made a great start to life in the top-flight and it appears to be the best solution to Alexander Isak’s exit to Liverpool on transfer deadline day.
