Newcastle star Nick Woltemade continued his run of goalscoring form for both club and country on Tuesday night as he scored his first goal for Germany.
Having lost to Slovakia in the opening round of qualifying games in Group A, Germany needed to go on a run of form under Julian Nagelsmann.
Had they lost to Northern Ireland on Monday night, it could have been a real uphill battle for them in terms of World Cup qualification. However, a sold out Windsor Park saw the German outfit beat their opponents 1-0 in Belfast in a largely uninspiring win, with Michael O’Neill’s men having more shots than the 2014 winners.
But it was Nick Woltemade’s strike that settled the tie in what was a freak goal, as he scored off his back from a corner. And that sort of luck is just what Newcastle could need heading into the new campaign.

Nick Woltemade’s Germany goal was a ‘freak’ incident which could benefit Newcastle in the long-term
It left Northern Ireland boss O’Neill disappointed, and rightly so. They haven’t qualified for a World Cup since 1986, and their last international tournament was Euro 2016.
But it’s that sort of luck that Newcastle will need if they are to propel themselves up the table in the Premier League, as well as hoisting themselves into the latter stages of the Champions League.
And it was what O’Neill said that perfectly captured why Woltemade is the ideal striker for Eddie Howe if they are to have moments like that happen in the future. The former Stoke City boss said: “The goal we lose is a freak goal.
“We should defend the corner better but it comes off the player’s shoulder and ends up in our net, so it wasn’t even a header.
“That’s disappointing, but in the second half we were terrific, we gave everything and we just couldn’t force an equaliser.
“It felt like a game that was either going to be decided by a moment of something special or a bit of a freak goal, which is ultimately how it was decided.”
If Woltemade can pick up a catalogue of goals in that category for Newcastle this season, they could be worth their weight in gold if the Magpies are to be successful.

Nick Woltemade has already scored some goals for Newcastle due to his unique stature
Even at the start of the month, Nick Woltemade scored with a backheel flick that many didn’t see coming in the Champions League.
Midfield maestro Sandro Tonali hit a shot that was set to test Union Saint-Gilloise goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen, but Woltemade’s 6ft 6in frame saw his long legs divert the ball home on the half-turn to leave the Belgian club stunned and behind on the night in an eventual 4-0 win for Newcastle.
It’s those type of goals that could really throw a game in Newcastle’s direction. He’s already scored three Premier League goals in four games, all coming at St. James’ Park, whilst former striker Alexander Isak has yet to get on the scoresheet for Liverpool after his British transfer record move.
It’s unusual to have a striker with good feet and a big frame, and although Woltemade’s goal for Germany went in off of his back, those surprising strikes are always helpful.
