Mikel Arteta got three big Arsenal decisions spot on in dramatic Newcastle comeback including hidden instruction

Arsenal completed the most stunning turnaround as they beat Newcastle in dramatic circumstances over the weekend.

The Gunners were left frustrated at times, as VAR overturned a penalty decision in the first half that they clearly felt aggrieved by.

The match then turned against them, as Nick Woltemade scored the opener with a header from a set-piece just before half-time.

As Arsenal pushed on, they finally found a breakthrough as Mikel Merino’s flicked header nestled into the back of the net.

Then came the winner, courtesy of Gabriel Magalhaes, rising highest to score with just minutes remaining.

So, with Arsenal landing a dramatic win over Newcastle, here’s a look at three things Mikel Arteta did right for his team.

Mikel Arteta’s sideline instruction to Arsenal players

Arsenal’s turnaround saw them score twice late on, and even though they could have settled late on for a point, they pushed on for the eventual winner.

The Gunners may not have done so, had Arteta told them to react differently.

Shortly after Merino’s header, not many may have seen the manager on the touchline reacting towards his players when the additional time was shown.

He was clearly seen telling his players that they had plenty of time, but also told them to keep attacking to find a winner.

They eventually did so, with the manager’s mindset clearly playing a part in that comeback.

Arsenal substitutes make an impact

One thing that Arteta seems to have got right so far this season is his overall use of the Arsenal squad during matches.

His use of substitutions has often come at the perfect time, and it’s no coincidence that this has come after a summer of heavy investment into improving the squad options.

Saliba, Merino, Odegaard, Martinelli and Lewis-Skelly all made an impact for Arsenal, helping to turn the game around.

Arteta’s use of substitutes has been better so far, and the Gunners have picked up more points thanks to it.

Arsenal’s starting lineup fit the intention

Arsenal have been accused of being defensive in recent weeks, due to the team selection of the head coach.

However, from minute one of the match at Newcastle, the away side looked intent on making a statement.

That was shown in a starting lineup that brought Eberechi Eze and Bukayo Saka back into the team.

It ended with Arsenal having 20 shots, over two xG and a dominant performance that warranted all three points, regardless of how late they came.
