Cody Gakpo thinks Arsenal had a winger as good as Cristiano Ronaldo but it’s a rather strange call

Cody Gakpo reckons Arsenal had one of the best left-wingers of all time, and arguably as good as Manchester United legend Cristiano Ronaldo.

Arsenal have been known for their dynamism in attack for many years; there’s no doubt about that. The likes of Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp, and Robin van Persie will go down as some of the Premier League’s greatest-ever forwards.

Even in the present day, Arsenal have some of the best attackers in the league, with Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze and many more used to terrorising defences.

Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo believes an Arsenal star of old is one of the greatest left-wingers of all time.

Cody Gakpo lauds Thierry Henry as a winger

In an interview with GOAL, the Dutchman didn’t hesitate to name Henry first when naming his ‘Mt Rushmore’ of left-wingers.

The trend is essentially to name the four greatest in that position, with the idea that you make up all the faces of the infamous American monument.

Gakpo named the following:

An illustrious set of players – but should Henry really have a place among the others?

Cristiano Ronaldo is far superior to Henry out wide

Henry is always in the greatest-of-all-time debates – but as an out-and-out centre-forward, not out wide.

Of course, he was a good winger, but the likes of Neymar, Ribery, and Ronaldo were far more impactful. Henry also only played 122 games there.

You could even argue Ryan Giggs or Gareth Bale should be up there. To pick Henry first is a strange call, but hey – that’s football, and everyone has an opinion.
