Ian Wright has heaped praise on Manchester United star Scott McTominay for his performance against Chelsea earlier this week.

Ian Wright praises Manchester United star Scott McTominay

Almost every Manchester United fan expected Scott McTominay to leave the club in the summer.

The 27-year-old was nowhere near the first choice under Ten Hag, and it looked almost certain that he would be on his way out, potentially to another Premier League club.

West Ham and Newcastle United were both heavily linked with a move to sign McTominay, but neither club could get him in the end because of Manchester United’s demands.

The Scot stayed at Old Trafford, and he has had a brilliant season so far. He was the star of the show against Chelsea earlier this week, and he deserves every praise that’s coming his way.

Arsenal legend Ian Wright is absolutely delighted for him.

He said on the Wrighty’s House podcast: “Scott McTominay, I love what he is doing. Because when you look at the way he’s playing and the way he is being played, you watch Scott McTominay from when he was a young player, that’s what he did.

“He’s an eight, he blasts into the box. You’ve got to recognise that and that’s how you’ve got to play him. He’s effective, he scores goals, he gets in the box.”

Erik ten Hag has given McTominay more freedom

Most of Scott McTominay’s games for Manchester United have come in that number six role, but he is so much more than just a defensive midfielder.

The Scot is fantastic when he plays as a number eight. His ability to make runs into the box is just brilliant, and he has an eye for a goal too – just look at his numbers of club and country this season.

Erik ten Hag seems to have noticed this, and he admitted after the game against Chelsea that he wants McTominay to play higher up the pitch.

That could unleash the 27-year-old, and he will be a huge goal threat every time United play this season.
