'He'd fit in perfectly': Pundit says Liverpool have to sign £100m star after Nunez if they want to stop Man City
Liverpool are reportedly on the verge of signing Darwin Nunez, and Gabby Agbonlahor has just urged Jurgen Klopp to follow that up by bringing in Jude Bellingham from Borussia Dortmund.
TalkSPORT have claimed that the Uruguayan’s move from Portugal to Merseyside is ‘all but done’ now. It has been reported that it’s only a matter of time before the deal is completed, which is excellent news for Reds fans.
After Manchester City signed Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund, Liverpool simply had to respond. They’ve done it brilliantly by going after Nunez, but Agbonlahor believes it’s still not enough to close down the gap between the Reds and Pep Guardiola’s side.
He has claimed that if Liverpool want to have any chance of stopping Manchester City next season, they’ve to sign at least one new midfielder – he says Jude Bellingham would be perfect.
Liverpool told to sign Jude Bellingham after Darwin Nunez
Speaking on talkSPORT, the Aston Villa hero said: “Nunez is a top player. He will improve and get even better.
“But Liverpool need midfielders. Thiago has injury problems, Jordan Henderson’s legs will start going now he’s in his thirties. They need two midfielders. Jude Bellingham would fit in perfectly for them.
“In defence and in goal, they have enough cover. Two centre-midfielders and Nunez, then they’ll be back challenging Man City for the title next season. You look at City’s midfield, I think Liverpool need at least one midfielder.
“They’re going in for Nunez because City have got Haaland. He’s going to be unstoppable and they’re going to be unstoppable next season. Liverpool had to make a big statement. Yes, Mane’s going. But Diaz, Jota and Salah… for me that’s not enough if you want to compete with City.”
TBR View:
Liverpool’s back five is arguably the best in the world. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ibrahima Konate, Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson are good enough to start for any side in Europe, and Klopp doesn’t even have to look at the transfer market for reinforcements in that area of the pitch.
Liverpool’s attack is as good as any other side as well. However, with Sadio Mane set to leave, they need a replacement, and Nunez, who scored 34 goals last season, is a fantastic option.
That leaves us with the midfield, which is arguably Liverpool’s weakest area of the pitch. It’s unclear if they’ll bring in a new player in that position after splashing a ton of money on Nunez, but Agbonlahor’s suggestion is not a bad one at all.
Bellingham would be absolutely perfect for Liverpool, and reports have previously claimed that the Reds are keen to sign him as well. However, he is valued at £100 million, and it’s difficult to imagine seeing FSG sanction that big a move right after they’ve broken the bank for Nunez.
