Tottenham Hotspur fans were really excited when their club signed Emerson Royal from Barcelona in the summer transfer window.
The Brazilian was fantastic in La Liga in the last two seasons. He was a star for Real Betis and everybody expected him to become a top player for Spurs when they announced his signing last summer.
However, Emerson has really struggled in North London. He wasn’t great under Nuno Espirito Santo and he’s hasn’t really been any better under Antonio Conte over the last few weeks.
Barcelona, who were initially criticised for selling Emerson, are now being praised.
Barcelona selling Emerson Royal to Tottenham has been hailed as a ‘golden deal‘
Tottenham forked out £25.73 million to sign Emerson from the Catalans on transfer deadline day in the summer. Spurs even beat Arsenal for his signature (Sky Sports), but their North London rivals have come out as the winners following the signing of Takehiro Tomiyasu on the same day.
Barcelona too are delighted that the Brazilian is no longer their player. Spanish newspaper AS claim that ‘the Blaugrana club made a golden deal by letting him go,’ which just shows what they think about Emerson’s displays in North London.
Emerson’s performance when he came on in the second half against Middlesbrough has opened the door for a ton of criticism. The Brazilian, branded as ‘disappointing‘ by ex-Spurs star Michael Dawson, is really struggling at the moment and it won’t be a surprise to see him replaced in a few months time.

Conte could replace Emerson in the summer
It’s only been few months since Emerson joined Tottenham and although it’s evident that he’s struggling, it is important to take into account that he’s just 23 years old.
However, we all know how Conte hates to lose and he’s never really been a fan of waiting for players to develop. As a result, Tottenham journalist Alasdair Gold believes that the Italian could well sell Emerson in the summer transfer window.
He said on his podcast, as quoted by TBR Football: “He may well come good, but there’s just got to be so much improvement.
“If Conte is around next season, I can’t see Emerson Royal being one of his wing-backs. I wouldn’t be shocked if he’s a player who moves on quite quickly again in the summer.”
