Alasdair Gold has told Gold and Guest talk Tottenham that he would not be shocked to see Emerson Royal leave the club in the summer should Antonio Conte stick around next season.
Royal has had a really tough time since joining Tottenham in the summer. It appeared to be an exciting piece of business as he arrived off the back of an impressive spell with Real Betis.

However, he has not yet been able to live up to expectations. He has come in for criticism for not offering anywhere near enough going forward. And he does not appear to suit the kind of role Conte wants his wing-backs to play.
Unfortunately, Royal’s struggles continued on Tuesday. He came off the bench during their FA Cup tie with Middlesbrough. However, he was poor after coming on. And he played Josh Coburn onside for what proved to be the decisive goal as Tottenham were knocked out.

It does appear that he has now fallen behind Matt Doherty in the pecking order. And that is quite something considering that the Irishman has not had the best time at Spurs either.
Gold suggested that he was wary of being critical of Royal. He has only recently turned 23 and is in his first season in the Premier League.
But he also suggested that Royal staying at Tottenham may be a lot less likely should Conte hang around beyond the summer.
“He may well come good, but there’s just got to be so much improvement,” he told Gold and Guest talk Tottenham.
“If Conte is around next season, I can’t see Emerson Royal being one of his wing-backs. I wouldn’t be shocked if he’s a player who moves on quite quickly again in the summer.”
Tottenham selling Emerson Royal may be best for all parties
As Gold noted, Royal could yet come good at Tottenham. He has impressed on a few occasions, being labelled ‘amazing‘ after one display earlier this season. And clearly, there is an opportunity for a player to stamp their authority on that position in the side.
But as things stand, it may make sense for all parties to let him go. He has struggled to kick on. And Tottenham parted with a hefty sum to bring him in last summer.
Tottenham will almost certainly sign a new right wing-back this summer. So moving Royal or Doherty on will surely be highly probable.
Right now, Royal leaving Tottenham perhaps looks the more likely.
