Liverpool missing out on Marc Guehi is sad news, but Virgil van Dijk will be absolutely delighted about something else.
The Reds have had a mixed summer transfer deadline day.
Arne Slot’s side will seal the Alexander Isak deal, but despite their best efforts, their move for Guehi collapsed at the very end.
Liverpool fans will be upset, but we have a feeling that Van Dijk will be delighted now after what he said on Sunday.
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk’s Joe Gomez wish comes true
Virgil van Dijk is one of Liverpool’s most important players.
The Dutchman is their captain and has been one of the biggest reasons why the Reds have enjoyed so much success over the years.
We’re sure Van Dijk would’ve loved a player of Guehi’s quality to join Liverpool, so he will be a little upset that his side failed to get that deal over the line.
However, there is one thing he will be absolutely buzzing about – Joe Gomez staying.
After the big win over Arsenal in the Premier League, Van Dijk publicly claimed that he wants Gomez to stay at the club.
“Of course, I want him to stay, as a friend and as a player,” a part of his comments read.
With Guehi set to stay at Crystal Palace now, Gomez, who was heavily linked with a move to AC Milan, is likely to remain at Liverpool.
Van Dijk’s wish has been granted!

Joe Gomez has a big role to play at Liverpool after Marc Guehi blow
Guehi would’ve been perfect for Liverpool.
Van Dijk is not getting any younger, while the future of Ibrahima Konate remains unresolved. Giovanni Leoni is still too young, which leaves them with Gomez.
The Englishman was incredible when he replaced Konate against Arsenal on Sunday. He contained the Gunners’ attack comfortably and produced some excellent numbers.
Now, Gomez has a big role to play in the coming months. He will not play every game, but he is more than capable of doing a job when necessary.
Liverpool will likely go back in for Guehi in 2026, but until then, Gomez can remind Liverpool fans that he is good enough to play for the club as well.
