Tottenham particularly interested in Illan Meslier - journalist
Journalist Phil Hay has told The Phil Hay Show on The Athletic that Tottenham Hotspur are particularly interested in signing Illan Meslier, with the Leeds United goalkeeper attracting a lot of attention.
Meslier has made a brilliant start to the campaign with the Whites. The Frenchman was excellent in pre-season. And he made some big saves in the opening day win over Wolves. Liam Cooper said his performance was ‘different class‘.
The 22-year-old clearly has huge potential. Remarkably for a goalkeeper of his age, he has already made 90 appearances for Leeds. And he has played 75 times in the Premier League.
‘Loads and loads of interest’
Reports last week claimed that Manchester United were eyeing Meslier. Obviously, that would be a hugely controversial move given the rivalry, and Hay suggested that he would be very surprised to see him head to Old Trafford.
However, a move to another Premier League side is not out of the question. Hay claimed that Spurs are closely monitoring Meslier – though Antonio Conte’s men do not have a clear run to his signature.
“There is loads and loads of interest in Meslier. I do feel like he’s going to be one of Leeds’ most important and probably best players this season,” he told The Phil Hay Show.
“Tottenham are a side who are particularly interested in Meslier. And obviously, at some point the goalkeeping situation is going to change there.”
Tottenham interested in Illan Meslier
As Hay notes, Tottenham will have to address their goalkeeper situation at some stage in the next few years. Both Hugo Lloris and Fraser Forster are entering the twilight of their careers.
Meslier will already have his sights set on succeeding Lloris as France’s number one. The Leeds man labelled the ‘fantastic’ Spurs captain as potentially the greatest goalkeeper in the country’s history.
Lloris meanwhile, lauded Meslier’s potential. So you would imagine that he would back Tottenham moving for the Leeds starlet in the future.
