According to The Athletic, Manchester United view Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier as someone who could replace David De Gea at Old Trafford one day.

The Whites initially signed the talented French shot-stopper on loan from Lorient in 2019. That move was made permanent in the following summer, and the 22-year-old has been really impressive.

Manchester United think Leeds star Illan Meslier could replace David De Gea

De Gea is Manchester United’s undisputed number one, and it has been that way for about a decade now. The £375,000-a-week Spaniard has played close to 500 games for the Red Devils and has made a name for himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

However, De Gea will turn 32 this winter, and Manchester United should be looking at long-term replacements for their star Spaniard.

Leeds star Meslier is reportedly an option. However, it has been claimed that the Whites have absolutely no intention of letting the 22-year-old Frenchman leave the club in this summer’s transfer window.

Meslier is a key part of Leeds’ side, and Jesse Marsch and co will do everything they possibly can to retain his services in this window and beyond.

TBR View:

Manchester United definitely are right to target a talented young player like Meslier, but it’s no shock that Leeds will not entertain any offers for him this summer.

The Frenchman has had his shaky moments at Elland Road, but he has also shown how incredible he can be on his day. He has saved Leeds on numerous occasions over the last two years. You can even argue that he played a big part in helping them survive in the Premier League last season.

Still only 22, Meslier will only get better in the coming years. He has the potential to become France’s number one in the future, and he would be a fine signing for many clubs, including Manchester United.

Leeds definitely won’t sell him this summer, but it will be interesting to see what they’ll do if a decent offer arrives from Manchester United this time next year.
