Football journalist Dean Jones has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur have liked Leicester City star James Maddison for years now.

Spurs have brought in six new players already this summer. Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster, Yves Bissouma, Richarlison and Clement Lenglet have all come in, while Djed Spence was unveiled just this morning.

Tottenham fans should be extremely happy with the business their side has done so far. But, there could still be more as there is a void to fill in that creative midfield department.

Christian Eriksen was heavily linked with a return to Spurs, but he has gone to Manchester United. That leaves the door open for someone else to come in, and Jones has suggested that Maddison could be the one.

Just yesterday, Jones revealed that Maddison would be open to a move to Tottenham as it is a big step up from Leicester. The Englishman has less than two years left on his contract and if the Foxes don’t cash in on him now, they run the risk of losing him for a low fee next year.

Jones has now revealed that Spurs do like Maddison and have liked him for a long, long time. However, the fact that the Englishman is Leicester’s best player may complicate things for the North Londoners, claims the journalist.

He told GiveMeSport: “It would be an amazing player for them to land just as the season’s getting underway.

“There’s no doubt they like him, they’ve liked him for a long time. I think the problem they’ve got is that James Maddison is Leicester’s best player.”

James Maddison is up there with the best attacking midfielders in the Premier League.

The 25-year-old scored 18 goals and provided 12 assists in all competitions last season. That’s just one goal and two assists less than what Kevin de Bruyne – the best attacking midfielder in the Premier League – managed last term, which shows just how good Maddison was.

One of the biggest problems Spurs faced last season was their inability to progress the ball forward quickly from a deeper position. Bissouma will help them do that, but Tottenham still need a midfielder who can score and create chances.

Maddison would be perfect for Spurs, but he’ll surely cost a fortune this summer.
