Manchester City got their Champions League campaign off to the perfect start after beating Napoli 2-0.
Erling Haaland and Jeremy Doku both scored in the second half on a comfortable night for Pep Guardiola’s side, who dominated proceedings against the 10-man Italians at the Etihad.
City are among the favourites to win the Champions League and they are clicking into top gear at the right time, having also beaten fierce rivals Manchester United in the derby last weekend.
There is a fresh, new look to their team after another summer of savvy spending, which saw the likes of Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki and Rayan Ait-Nouri arrive.
But it is another big-name recruit who has stolen the headlines over the past few days.

Tijjani Reijnders praises Gianluigi Donnarumma
Gianluigi Donnarumma had been put up for sale by Paris Saint-Germain, and City swooped to beat Manchester United to the goalkeeper’s signature.
The 26-year-old has been imperious in his first two appearances for Manchester City, keeping clean sheets in both matches and pulling off a string of eye-catching stops.
It is no surprise, then, that Reijnders was so keen to lavish praise on him after the win over Napoli.
Speaking to reporters in the mixed zone, the midfielder said of Donnarumma: “He’s a great, great goalkeeper. The saves he does for us are amazing and help us a lot. He gives confidence to the team.
“It’s a pleasure that we have him. We’re both from Milan, so we have something in common.”
Donnarumma already has a pedigree in the Champions League, having lifted the famous trophy with PSG last season, and he has undoubtedly hit the ground running at City.
An impressed Joe Hart even labelled Donnarumma a “monster”.

Gianluigi Donnarumma’s Champions League stats
City signed Donnarumma for just £26m, a real bargain. He was brought in with a view to helping them challenge across multiple fronts, with club figures desperate to win the Champions League again.
Luckily for them, Donnarumma is no stranger to the competition. He has made 41 appearances in the Champions League across his career, conceding 45 goals and keeping 12 clean sheets.
| Statistic | Total |
|---|---|
| Appearances | 41 |
| Clean sheets | 12 |
| Goals conceded | 45 |
| Shots on target faced | 161 |
| Saves | 117 |
| Save success rate | 73.7% |
Across those matches, the giant Italian has made 117 saves from 161 shots on target, an impressive 73.3% success rate.
He has also tasted defeat in the Champions League just 12 times, proving Donnarumma is the type of player City can rely on during what they will hope is another campaign to remember.
