Arsenal have been dealt a potential transfer blow, with the news that Tottenham have now agreed a fee for Djed Spence – a player the Gunners were linked with ahead of the summer.

The Daily Mirror reported towards the end of last season that Arsenal were lining up a £20 million move for the 21-year-old.

However, it is Spurs who look set to bring Spence to North London. The Times reported on Thursday that the ‘unbelievable‘ youngster could complete a £12 million move on Friday.

In truth, Arsenal did not appear to be linked for some time. So some may wonder whether if it that much of a disappointment for Mikel Arteta’s side.

But, based on reports this week, the Gunners are still in the market for a new right-back. Thankfully, missing out on Spence may actually be very good news for Arsenal.

The Athletic claimed that Arsenal were monitoring Kyle Walker-Peters. However, it was also noted that Tottenham had agreed a buy-back clause worth £30 million when they sold the 25-year-old to Southampton.

And subsequently, it was reported that Spurs are exploring the possibility of re-signing the England international.

However, you would have to assume that signing Spence will take Spurs out of the race to sign Walker-Peters.

Tottenham move for Spence surely helps Arsenal in Walker-Peters pursuit

Of course, that is not the only hurdle Arsenal would have to clear if they make a bid.

Southampton will surely want more than £30 million for the full-back if the Gunners come calling. And that asking price will only rise further as the season edges closer.

But Tottenham are now set to have three right-backs. And Spence could potentially find himself as first-choice for many years to come.

So a return for Walker-Peters is surely out of the question. And that may just help Arsenal if they do decide to confirm their interest with a bid.
