Manchester United had to field a ridiculously inexperienced bench against Tottenham at the weekend.

Indeed, due to their ongoing injury crisis, Manchester United had to name a bench packed with teenagers, barring Victor Lindelof.

United’s youthful bench was a sign of how dire the injury situation is at United at the moment, but it’s also a sign of how bright the future could be at Manchester United.

Indeed, these young players could develop to be first-team options, and according to Robbie Savage, speaking on BBC 606, there’s one player in particular worth keeping an eye on.

Robbie Savage praises Chido Obi

Robbie Savage knows a lot about the Manchester United academy.

Indeed, Savage was an academy graduate himself, while his son, Charlie, was on the books for a long time.

Savage has an eye on the United academy quite a lot too in his managerial role at Macclesfield Town – Macclesfield recently signed D’Mani Mellor, who was once on the books at United.

According to the pundit, Chido Obi is a young player to keep an eye on at United.

Obi left Arsenal to sign for Manchester United in the summer, while Ayden Heaven also left Arsenal for United recently.

“Well, Chris, you know as well as I do, you know, the thing with young players, they’ve got to be ready. You can throw them in, Chris. They may not be ready and that could really hurt them going forward,” Savage said.

“Playing in front of 60,000 at Spurs, you know, if you, if they want the ball, give the ball away. You could really hurt them if you put them in when they’re not ready. I know a lot of those young players, you know, Darren Fletcher’s, you know, youngsters, they’re very, very good players.

But are they ready? Obi, the kid from Arsenal, watched him recently, Chris, he scores goals for fun. He’s one for the future most definitely.”

Chido Obi’s youth goalscoring record

Savage says that Obi is a player to keep an eye on, and he’s not wrong.

Indeed, this young man has been one of the most dominant players at U18 level in recent years.

Obi once scored 10 goals in one game against Liverpool’s U18s, while he was training with Arsenal’s first-team at the age of just 15.

The sky is seemingly the limit for this young man, and, excitingly, he’s not the only top young prospect at United.

Indeed, last year, Scott McTominay said there were four promising youngsters coming through at United.

“There’s a lot of players who train with us all time time, we have Dan Gore, Kobbie (Mainoo), Omari (Forson), Reece Bennett and people like that. For us it’s good to watch them coming through. That’s what we need and everyone who has been through the academy was once at that stage. As much as I can help, I’m here for that,” McTominay said.

Kobbie Mainoo has since become a star at first-team level, Reece Bennett and Dan Gore are currently out on loan still, while Omari Forsun is now playing in Serie A.

United’s current situation is bleak to say the least, but the future does look to be brighter for the Red Devils.
