Report: Tottenham now want to sign 'unreal' PL star who tormented Tomiyasu this season
According to TuttoJuve, Tottenham Hotspur and Juventus are battling to sign Brighton and Hove Albion defender Marc Cucurella this summer.
Spurs’ complete focus at the moment is on finishing inside the top four. They are two points behind Arsenal, but if they win all their remaining games, they will return to the Champions League next season.
Irrespective of where they finish in the Premier League this term, Spurs need a big summer window. Antonio Conte reportedly wants six to eight new players, including a new left-back.
If the report from Italy is to be believed, La Masia graduate Cucurella is the man they’re looking at.
Tottenham want to sign Marc Cucurella
Brighton signed Cucurella from Barcelona for £15.4 million last summer (BBC). The Spaniard has been a huge hit at the Amex, and his performances this season, even against the big teams, have been really impressive.
Branded as a player with an ‘unreal engine’ after his spectacular performance against Arsenal back in October, Cucurella is expected to attract a ton of interest this summer, and it looks like Spurs are one of the clubs keen.
Conte isn’t fully convinced by Sergio Reguilon in a wing-back role, while even though Ryan Sessegnon has done well when he has played there, he still has a lot to improve.
The report claims that Cucurella is valued at £17 million, but we imagine Brighton will demand a lot more than that this summer.
Arsenal’s Tomiyasu had a torrid time vs Cucurella
Back in October last year, Brighton managed to secure a 0-0 draw against Arsenal at the Amex. Cucurella was a constant threat throughout the game and that was probably Takehiro Tomiyasu’s toughest outing in a Gunners shirt.
After the game, Alan Smith said about Cucurella, as quoted by HITC: “He was a constant threat up that left-hand side. Tomiyasu will be glad to see the back of him, that first half especially he gave him a torrid time.
“He’s got the energy, he’s got the stamina you need for this league but he’s also got the quality, he’s got the heart as well.”
Cucurella was undoubtedly the best player on the pitch against the Gunners last year and he impressed again last month, helping his side beat the Gunners at the Emirates. If he becomes a Spurs player this summer, that’s one habit Tottenham fans will hope he’ll continue.
