Described as a ‘great all-round footballer’, Gomes joined Everton in 2019 for £22m and was a mainstay for the Toffees during the 2020/21 season, making 28 league appearances.

But the 28-year-old has struggled to stay fit during his time on Merseyside, and notably suffered a horrendous ankle injury against Tottenham three months into his Everton career.
Gomes’ game time was limited further under Frank Lampard, and he failed to make the match day squad on seven occasions in 2022, with the likes of Doucoure, Allan and Mason Holgate preferred by Lampard in the holding midfield role.
Gomes leaving Everton works for all parties
There were concerns that Everton may fail Financial Fair Play this summer, and have so far had a slow transfer window, with James Tarkowski the only player to come through the door, joining on a free transfer.
Everton have already sold Richarlison to Spurs for a large fee, and if they can find a suitable bidder for Gomes, this may give Lampard some extra cash in his transfer budget to improve the squad elsewhere.

The Toffees are reportedly close to a deal to sign Ruben Vinagre on a season-long loan, and have been linked with Arsenal target Lucas Paqueta, but will need more than these three players to avoid another relegation scrap, especially as Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been linked with a move away from Goodison Park.
Gomes’ injury problems may deter some clubs, but he’s attracted interest from former clubs Benfica and Porto, and according to Mundo Deportivo is reportedly interested in a move to Sevilla.
