Football journalist Dean Jones has claimed that Everton star Dominic Calvert-Lewin is still the guy Newcastle United would love to sign in this window.

A lot was expected of the Magpies this summer after their excellent January window. Eddie Howe’s side’s transfer business at the start of the year is the biggest reason why they survived last season, and if they want to go to the next level this term, they need big players.

Newcastle have Callum Wilson and Chris Wood up top, and both players are really good at what they do. However, the Magpies need a much better striker, and Howe has already made up his mind about who he wants.

Calvert-Lewin, branded as ‘absolutely magnificent’ by Alan Shearer, has long been linked with a move to Newcastle, and Jones believes that the Toon will table a bid at some point in this window.

Speaking about Newcastle’s transfers, Jones told GiveMeSport: “Calvert-Lewin is still the guy that they would love to lead their attack.

“Obviously, we haven’t seen an aggressive push to sign him at this point.

“I think they’re trying to get the kind of figures into place that might convince Everton to do business. They know they don’t want to sell the player.

“So you’re going to have to put forward a good offer from day one, if it’s going to happen.”

TBR View:

Calvert-Lewin is a fantastic player, and he would be a sensational signing for Newcastle, but he will cost an outrageous amount of money in this window.

The 25-year-old still has three years left on his £72,000-a-week contract. He is arguably Everton’s most important player now, and after the Toffees made big money off Richarlison, they aren’t really under big pressure to get rid of another one of their stars.

It will be interesting to see how this pans out in the coming weeks. Calvert-Lewin would be perfect for the Magpies, but losing him could all but push Everton to the brink of relegation.

That makes it an exciting transfer battle to watch, but it could take a few weeks before an official bid will be made.
