A surprise rumour popped out of the rumour mill this week that claimed Tottenham Hotspur had approached the agents of Manchester United star Jesse Lingard to discuss a potential move in the summer.

Lingard was a forgotten man in the Premier League until about this time last year. He moved to West Ham United on loan last January and instantly became a star at the London Stadium.

Everyone were almost convinced that he would be on the move before the start of this season, but he stayed at Manchester United. He wanted to prove himself at his club, but that hasn’t really worked out for him.

Lingard has barely played at Old Trafford and he is now set to move on as a free agent at the end of this season.

Jesse Lingard may snub Tottenham for a move abroad

Football London first revealed this week that Spurs have made contact with Lingard to discuss a potential move in the summer.

The Daily Mail have backed that claim today, but they believe that the Englishman is leaning towards snubbing Antonio Conte’s side in favour of a move away from the Premier League.

Lingard, labelled as ‘amazing’ by Rio Ferdinand, is now allowed to sign a pre-contract agreement with any foreign club in the world. After watching his performances for West Ham, we expect multiple sides to make an approach and it really will be interesting to see where he’ll end up once he leaves Old Trafford.

Would Lingard fit in Conte’s system?

A fit and firing Lingard would be an asset to most sides in the Premier League including Tottenham. If he joined them instead of West Ham last season and did what he did, Spurs would’ve definitely finished higher than the Hammers. However, it wasn’t meant to be.

It looks like it’s not meant to be this summer either and that may just be the best thing for Spurs.

Conte’s currently plays a 3-4-3 system at Tottenham and it’s difficult to see where Lingard would fit in. It’s not that the Manchester United man can’t play in a flat midfield or in one of the wide positions, but would he be as good as he was last season in the Italian’s style of play? We don’t think so!

It still would be fascinating to see how Lingard would fare at Tottenham under Conte, but if the report is to be believed, it’s not likely to happen.
