Report: Conte wants Tottenham to land 55-cap star

Antonio Conte remains interested in bringing Stefan de Vrij to Tottenham Hotspur during the January transfer window as he looks to strengthen at centre-back, according to a report from the Guardian.

Conte has an extensive shopping list for this month. The Guardian reports that he would ideally like a centre-back, a midfielder, a right-sided player and another striker.

However, he reportedly accepts that making signings in all of those positions is going to be difficult in January.

The Guardian reports that a reunion with de Vrij is on Conte’s radar. The Italian worked with the 29-year-old while in charge at Inter Milan. Of course, the pair won the Scudetto at San Siro last season.

It is noted that de Vrij does not fit the profile of signings Daniel Levy would prefer. But clearly, he does still tick a number of boxes.

The Dutchman still has a couple of years at the peak of his powers. And he would not need long to adapt to life at Tottenham, having played frequently in the middle of a back three under Conte.

Stefan de Vrij would be a great signing for Tottenham, but may not be a priority for Antonio Conte

Only four players in Serie A boast a better pass-completion rate this season, according to FB Ref. And he just entered the final 18 months of his contract with the Nerazzurri, so he may perhaps not cost as much as some would expect.

It is not clear just how determined Conte is to sign de Vrij. He has tended to use Eric Dier in the middle of the back three during the early stages of his tenure.

And he recently suggested that Dier could become one of the world’s best in that role. And that perhaps makes a move for de Vrij in this window appear to be a little difficult to imagine.

Conte is surely unlikely to have the kind of budget that addresses his entire wishlist. And with that, he may have to put off some moves until the summer.

Dier has been excellent since his arrival. And other areas of the squad arguably require more urgent attention. So perhaps it should not be a surprise if Conte feels open to the idea of delaying any move for de Vrij until the end of the season.
