‘Remains of interest’: Aston Villa still keen to sign ‘extraordinary’ £40m man ahead of Tottenham – journalist

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery will be keen to put his own stamp on the squad in the upcoming transfer windows.

Birmingham Live journalist Ashley Preece has been answering questions on his potential future strategy.

Despite Villa’s poor start to the season, there’s been plenty of investment in the squad in recent years.

The likes of Philippe Coutinho, Diego Carlos and Emi Buendia have all been expensive signings.

Unfortunately, that trio haven’t quite had the desired impact at Villa Park.

Diego Carlos has been particularly unlucky having picked up a serious injury weeks after signing.

Emery will have spent the World Cup break identifying problems within the squad and potential solutions.

One position that Preece believes Villa will want to strengthen is centre-back.

Carlos’ injury, alongside the up-and-down form of Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa make it an obvious area of improvement for Emery.

The Birmingham Live journalist now believes that Villa are still keen on Villarreal defender Pau Torres.

Villa still keen on Pau Torres

The Villarreal centre-back has been on a number of Premier League side’s radars.

A report from 90min suggest Villarreal value Torres at £40m.

The ‘extraordinary’ defender has been linked with Tottenham for some time, which could make it difficult for Villa to sign him.

Antonio Conte’s side have been in the market for another defender, with the likes of Japhet Tanganga and Davinson Sanchez not up to scratch.

Torres is a fantastic ball-playing centre-back, and thrives in a possession-heavy team.

The 25-year-old has performed well in Europe for Villarreal, and was instrumental in their Europa League win over Manchester United under Emery.

Preece admitted that Aston Villa’s plan is to give Diego Carlos the best opportunity possible to recover from his knee injury.

However, Villa remain keen on signing Torres in the summer, when the centre-back position will need to be addressed.

“Emery wants to give Diego Carlos as much time to recover and play some games in the second half of the season,” Preece wrote.

“Pau Torres remains of interest. [Jan] Bednarek, yeah, Villa are not likely to trigger permanent option on him but I could be wrong.”
