Danny Mills feels reported Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United target Jesse Lingard has ‘overpriced himself’ in this summer’s transfer window.

The Englishman ran down his contract at Manchester United last month and is now a free agent.

Reports over the last few weeks have revealed that Tottenham are interested in Lingard, while Everton boss Frank Lampard is said to be a fan as well. West Ham United are also keen to re-sign him, but nobody has managed to agree a deal with him just yet.

Mills has had his say on the situation, and he feels Lingard must lower his demands to have any chance of securing a move to a good club this summer.

Speaking about Lingard still being a free agent, Mills said on talkSPORT: “If he was that important and teams thought he was that good, he would’ve been signed by now. He’d be snapped up, whether it be £150k, £200k-a-week.

“If they thought he was good enough they’d go for it because it’s a free transfer.

“He’s clearly overpriced himself and people are going ‘no, not for us, I think we’ll wait and see’ and ‘yeah, good luck mate if you think you can get it’. But all the big teams now are starting to make signings, so where does he go?

“You have to be careful. I think he may run out of time and he might just have to suddenly take a bit of a last-ditch one.”

When Newcastle United were heavily linked with a move for Lingard back in May, it was revealed that the 29-year-old was demanding exorbitant wages in the region of £200,000 per week (Chronicle).

That is a lot of money, even for a free agent, and if his demands are still the same, it probably explains why clubs have been hesitant to get a deal over the line.

Tottenham, who have had a truly sensational transfer window so far, can afford those wages, but it’s hard to imagine Daniel Levy paying a 29-year-old so much money.

Lingard, branded as ‘brilliant’, would definitely be a good signing for Tottenham or West Ham, but if he doesn’t bring his demands down, he may not secure a move to either club this summer.
