According to the Liverpool Echo, Everton have opened talks to sign Jesse Lingard, although they face competition from Tottenham.

What’s the story?

Well, the Liverpool Echo believe Everton view the England international as someone who can replace Richarlison, after the Brazilian completed a £60m move to Tottenham.

However, Spurs could provide the Toffees with further heartache, as the Telegraph believe Antonio Conte wants Lingard in north London in addition to Richarlison.

The 29-year-old’s status as a homegrown player appeals to Tottenham, as the arrival of Yves Bissouma saw Spurs exceed the limit for non-homegrown options in their squad.

Conte also wants to beef up his squad as Champions League football is now on the schedule for next season, with Lingard a target – the attacking midfielder is said to have many admirers in N17.

Aside from Everton, West Ham are also interested in the Manchester United outcast, and have sent him a contract offer.

Newcastle were also keen on Lingard, but backed away after learning that he wanted a salary of £200,000-a-week.

In 22 appearances last season, the Warrington-born attacker scored two goals for the Red Devils.

Tottenham could further upset Everton

If Spurs are successful in stealing Lingard away from Everton, they will become even more unpopular at Goodison Park.

Next season’s meetings between the pair should already be interesting after Conte pinched Richarlison from Frank Lampard, so if Spurs proceed to also poach Lingard, the Toffees will surely be furious.

In our view, Everton shouldn’t view Lingard as a replacement for Richarlison anyway.

The South American was the main man at Goodison Park, and it would not appease supporters if he is replaced by a free transfer who is also three years older.

Of course, Lingard would be a decent signing, but if he really is being viewed as the Richarlison replacement, those on Merseyside will surely demand better.
