Paul Scholes named the two strikers that Manchester United should sign in the summer transfer window just months ago, but both have already found new clubs away from Ruben Amorim’s Red Devils.
Considering where his side finished in the Premier League last season, what a summer it’s been for Manchester United.
Matheus Cunha joined United first, in a £62.5m deal from Wolverhampton Wanderers. Then, it was Bryan Mbeumo time for the Red Devils.

But United still need a striker, and options are dwindling in the market.
Paul Scholes told Ruben Amorim to sign Gyokeres and Osimhen
In June, Paul Scholes spoke on The Overlap about Manchester United’s striker situation and suggested that Amorim sign two serial goal-getters in Viktor Gyokeres and Victor Osimhen, as well as keep the struggling Rasmus Hojlund.
“Get [Victor] Osimhen and [Viktor] Gyokeres,” Scholes said.
“[Rasmus] Hojlund, he’s struggled like mad of late, especially, but he’s not got the chance to sit down and watch.
“If a striker is not doing well, no confidence, the manager sits you down and says, ‘have a look, get a bit of hunger back, a bit of feeling back for the game.’
“We all know he has got centre-forward qualities; we’ve seen it. Not enough, I know that, but if he has got experience around him…
“Say he had Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke around him, it’d bring him on so much. He’s been absolutely flogged to death.
“People forget how old he is. A lot of it is confidence.”
Osimhen is set for Galatasaray, with the Nigerian goal-getter heading back to the Super Lig, where he enjoyed a successful campaign on loan.
Gyokeres is joining Arsenal, of course, where he’ll actually face the Red Devils, if the deal goes through, in the first Premier League game of the season.
Manchester United’s striker options
United got neither of Scholes’ recommendations – but who could they still go for? Well, these strikers have all been speculated to be on the move at some stage or another this summer.
- Benjamin Sesko – RB Leipzig
- Nicolas Jackson – Chelsea
- Ollie Watkins – Aston Villa
- Dominic Calvert-Lewin – Free Agent
Options are dwindling, and Sesko looks United’s best option, although they face competition, plus the Slovenian would come at a pretty penny.
Nevertheless, United need a striker. It’s a necessity, not a luxury, so it’s exciting to see what may materialise in the coming weeks at Old Trafford.
