‘Outstanding’: Gabby Agbonlahor now thinks Tottenham target is the best player in the world in his position
Tottenham Hotspur returned to Premier League action with a 2-2 draw against a stubborn Brentford side.
Antonio Conte gave Fraser Forster a league debut in goal, with Hugo Lloris dropping to the bench after his World Cup exploits.
In recent weeks, Tottenham have been linked with a move for Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez.
The 30-year-old has had an incredible month, helping his country win the World Cup in Qatar.
Martinez wasn’t even first choice for Argentina at the start of qualifying, but was instrumental in their final win.
He saved two penalties in a memorable shootout, and made headlines with his distraction techniques.
Agbonlahor has now said that Martinez is currently the best goalkeeper in the world.
It’s a massive claim from the ex-Villa forward, who also believes his old club have nothing to worry about regarding his future.
Martinez is the best goalkeeper in the world – Agbonlahor
Speaking ahead of Villa’s clash with Liverpool, Agbonlahor was asked about the Argentinian.
“I think he’s the best goalkeeper in the world,” Agbonlahor said.
“He’s won the World Cup with Argentina [with an] outstanding performance.
“I mean some of the saves he made all through the tournament.
“I think everyone who was watching the tournament knew that Argentina were going to win with Emi Martinez in goal.
“So, he’s got to come back to Aston Villa now, he’s signed until 2027, so there’s no worries for Aston Villa, they’ve done their business early, and he’s coming back as the best goalkeeper in the world.”
Tottenham will know that they need to bring in a new goalkeeper soon, with Lloris turning 36 today.
Martinez is certainly a good option, although it may be a stretch to say he’s the best keeper in the world right now.
A report from 90min suggests Martinez is set to have talks with Unai Emery before the January transfer window.
Both parties recognise that his increased profile could mean a move is on the cards.
However, Fabrizio Romano has since said that Martinez is expected to stay at Villa.
That may change if the goalkeeper makes it clear he wants a new challenge.
But right now, Villa will be looking forward to their World Cup hero returning home soon.
