Tottenham are now interested in signing £17m star who has just been hailed as ‘the best in the world’
Emi Buendia has called his Aston Villa teammate Emi Martinez the best goalkeeper in the world ahead of the World Cup final.
Martinez is one game away from footballing immortality as his Argentina side take on France in the biggest game on earth.
In an interview with the Athletic, Buendia said his countryman is the best in the world in his position right now.
Buendia hails Martinez
He said: “Emi Martinez tells me the players are enjoying this crazy feeling now. They are preparing for probably the most important game in their lives.
“He deserves to be there. The last two or three years he has worked hard to be there. There have been some very good goalkeepers at this World Cup but I think Martinez is the best in the world right now.
“He has shown his personality by showing everyone in the world what he can do. He won the Copa America and was Golden Glove.
“He equalled a clean sheet record here at Villa in his first season. He is the main number one.”
Journalist Dean Jones told GiveMeSport that Martinez is a goalkeeping target for Tottenham as they look to the succession plan for his opposite number on Sunday, Hugo Lloris.
He said: “A very interesting position at Spurs going forward. I’m pretty sure they’re also looking at Emi Martinez and whether he might consider a move at the end of the season.”
Whether he is the best in the world is up for debate and Thibaut Courtois and Alisson may have something to say about that, but if he wins the World Cup, he will be a hero in Argentina.
