‘No chance’: BT Sport pundit can’t believe there are calls for Conte to drop ‘top’ Tottenham Hotspur player

Tottenham Hotspur’s unbeaten start to the season came to an end last night Sporting.

Antonio Conte’s team produced a flat performance and conceded two goals at the death to fall to their first defeat.

Speaking to BT Sport after the match, Rio Ferdinand discussed the form of forward Son Heung-min.

Son has yet to open his account this season after eight appearances, and has provided just one assist.

BBC Sport pundit Leon Osman doesn’t believe Son is the same player as last season, and the frustration is clear.

However, Ferdinand has said he wouldn’t drop Son yet, given how good he was last season.

“No chance, blasphemy! (He was) Golden Boot winner last year, top scorer with Mo Salah.” Ferdinand said.

“We’re six league games in, a couple of Champions League games and they’re asking for him to be dropped.

“Were they asking for Harry Kane to be dropped when he didn’t score a goal in August all of those times?

“If I’m taking a player out of Spurs for my team, it’s going to be him or Harry Kane, it’s a flip of a coin.

“He’s a top player.”

Ferdinand wouldn’t drop Son

The dilemma Antonio Conte faces is the form of Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison.

It’s impossible to drop talisman Harry Kane, and so Conte has to choose which two players to partner with him.

Richarlison already has a Champions League brace this season, and has been ‘exceptional’ this season.

Kulusevski has been a ‘revelation’ since joining from Juventus in January but has been on the bench for the last three matches.

Some of Son’s underlying numbers suggest the Conte should stick with the South Korean.

He’s shooting more than last season, and having a higher number of shots on target.

He’s also producing more goal-creating actions per 90 minutes than last season, as per FBRef.

Ferdinand is insistent he wouldn’t drop Son, and Conte might be hoping that one goal might change his fortunes.

However, he’ll be wondering just how long he can keep Richarlison or Kulusevski out of the side.
