BBC pundit says Son does not look the same player for Tottenham
Spurs endured another frustrating evening in the competition. Of course, it was only thanks to two late goals from Richarlison that they managed to win their opening game in the group.
And they were pushed once again this week. Ruben Amorim’s side created some amazing chances for themselves, with Marcus Edwards proving to be the star of the show against his former club.
Tottenham had their moments. Emerson Royal actually ended up getting on the end of a number of chances, while Richarlison also had some bright spots.
‘Most likely to make way’
But it proved to be another tough game for Son. He linked up well with Harry Kane on a couple of occasions. But ultimately, he still looked to be some way short of his best.
Obviously, Son is still awaiting his first goal of the season. And Osman suggested at the break against Sporting that he is still some way off the standard he set during the previous campaign.
“Richarlison has looked most likely to get in behind,” he told BBC Sport. “Son Heung-Min has had a couple of moments but he has not looked like the Son from last season and would be the player most likely to make way if and when Antonio Conte chooses to make changes.”
Son does not look the same player
The frustration for Son, Antonio Conte and Tottenham is knowing that it will come together at some point. The 30-year-old is simply too good a player to struggle for too long.
Obviously, the problem for Spurs is that they now have four world-class forwards. So Conte must be getting tempted to leave Son on the bench and deploy Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison either side of Kane.
That would not necessarily be portrayed as Son being dropped. All of the attacking players are going to have games out of the starting lineup.
But if Conte does put that trio together and it clicks, Son may have to be prepared to be patient before regaining his place.
