Owen Hargreaves lauds exceptional Richarlison after Tottenham win

Owen Hargreaves has told BT Sport (broadcast on 7/9; 21:54) that Richarlison is exceptional in the air following the Brazilian’s match-winning display in Tottenham Hotspur’s Champions League opener on Wednesday.

Spurs secured three points from their opening group game. But Marseille made them work extremely hard for the result in North London.

Antonio Conte’s men were extremely poor during the first-half. And the Ligue 1 side were largely comfortable until they had Chancel Mbemba sent off after the break.

Tottenham were still struggling to make having the extra man count. But when they needed someone to step up, it was Richarlison who produced the goods.

The 25-year-old scored two headers late on to settle the tie. The second finish, in particular, was a moment of brilliance from the Spurs summer signing.

And his heroics left Richarlison emotional at full-time as he celebrated with his family. Of course, he was making his Champions League debut in the game. And Hargreaves was full of praise for the forward’s contribution in the win.

“As a young boy, you dream of getting to this stage, playing in front of this crowd, this stadium,” he told BT Sport.

“He’s worked so hard. And to score two in your first Champions League game is pretty special. He’s exceptional in the air and we saw that tonight.”

Richarlison exceptional

It was not a perfect night for Richarlison. He seemed to infuriate Conte during the first-half after failing to put himself in the right position to retain possession.

But he proved a point in the end. He showed that he has the ability to be a game-changer when Tottenham needed one.

That is exactly why Spurs brought him to the club in the summer. And now Conte will simply have to consider whether he keeps his starting spot for Saturday when Tottenham face Manchester City.
