Report: Newcastle have put 'sensational' £40m Tottenham target at the very top of their shopping list
Newcastle United are still keen on signing Leicester midfielder James Maddison and he is reportedly top of their shopping list right now.
The Magpies are expected to try and strengthen during the January window. PIF are keen to keep on backing Eddie Howe, who has guided Newcastle into the fight for the top four.
And according to the Northern Echo, Maddison is the one they want the most. It’s claimed that while Newcastle are looking to bring in younger players with high development and sell-on possibilities, they also want to sign established stars as well.
Maddison is very much in that mold. After starring for Leicester in the early part of this season, Maddison was handed a call into the England squad for the World Cup. So far, however, Maddison has failed to feature after nursing an injury.
Of course, Newcastle’s interest is nothing brand new here. Only a few weeks ago it was suggested that Maddison’s name was the talk of the Toon. Meanwhile, Tottenham are also known to be big admirers of the former Norwich and Coventry City ace.
It seems, then, that Maddison will very much be a name to watch in January.
TBR’s View: Tottenham and Newcastle instantly improve with James Maddison
No player warranted a call into the England squad based purely on form more than Maddison. He has been sensational for Leicester and shown everyone just how good he can be.
Indeed, ‘sensational‘ is the word Glenn Hoddle used to describe the midfielder. As it stands, he improves both Newcastle and Tottenham.
On this occasion, if Newcastle did land Maddison, it would be a statement signing. With so much interest, if Maddison chose the northeast it would very much send a message.
Of course, more bids could come if clubs get wind that Leicester will sell. Essentially, this could become an auction for the England man.
