‘X-factor’: Merson stunned by reported Spurs attacking midfield target, Hoddle said he’s ‘sensational’

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with Leicester City’s James Maddison in recent months.

Antonio Conte’s Spurs were apparently monitoring the England international in the summer.

Newcastle United were also said to be in pursuit of Maddison, but a move didn’t materialise.

Since then, a number of journalists have claimed that Tottenham still hold an interest in the 25-year-old.

Pete O’Rourke recently told GiveMeSport: “I think it’s a hard deal to do in January.

“But it’s one to maybe keep an eye on next summer, especially if Leicester are struggling at the wrong end of the table.

“Spurs, I’m sure, will be among a number of clubs looking at Maddison.”

The attacking midfielder has been shining for Leicester this season, despite their relegation battle.

He has six goals and two assists from 11 Premier League outings in 2022-23.

‘I would take him – one hundred percent’

Now, with the World Cup just weeks away, Maddison is reportedly still in with a shout of making the England squad.

Leicester Live speculates that Gareth Southgate is likely to be at Saturday’s meeting between the Foxes and Everton.

Paul Merson, writing on Sportskeeda, believes the reported Tottenham target should make the cut.

“I think James Maddison can still make it to the World Cup,” he said.

“I would take him – one hundred percent.

“The other nations haven’t played against him much and won’t know much about him.

“He has an X-factor about him and deserves to be in the squad.”

‘Maddison, I love him’

Tottenham legend Glenn Hoddle believes Spurs could do with a new creative midfielder.

And speaking to TalkSPORT recently, he admitted he was a big fan of Maddison.

“They need some creativity,” said Hoddle.

“At the moment it’s down to them, it’s down to Harry dropping in and creating.

“I think the style of players they’ve got at the top of the pitch if you did have an Eriksen – when he was at Tottenham for example – Maddison, I agree with whoever said that.

“Maddison, I love him. He should be in the England squad.

“I think if he was playing in top club, no disrespect to Leicester, he’d be absolutely sensational and a shoo-in.”
