Manchester United have made a fair few transfer blunders in recent years.
Indeed, United haven’t got their recruitment right at all over the past decade or so.
Joshua Zirkzee is the worst signing of the season this year in the eyes of some, while Mason Mount hasn’t contributed much at all since signing.
Meanwhile, Romelu Lukaku was lambasted as a poor signing too, and that’s before we even start to discuss the likes of Antony and Rasmus Hojlund.
Speaking on the Seaman Says Podcast, Neil Warnock has been discussing United’s recent transfer business, and he says that the Red Devils should’ve signed Declan Rice before he went to Arsenal.

Manchester United should’ve signed Declan Rice
Warnock spoke about United’s recent business and the idea that they should’ve signed Declan Rice.
The former Leeds manager says that he thought United should’ve been after Rice before his move to Arsenal.
Rice has been praised since joining Arsenal, with some even describing him as ‘fantastic’.
“I thought Man United should sign Declan Rice before he went to Arsenal. And I thought, spend a good amount of money on a good player instead of buying three or four rubbish,” Warnock said.
“When you look at Declan, you look at how he plays, it’s not a gamble, is it? He might have a bad game here and there, but it’s not a gamble where you pay, was it Sancho? They played 70 million quid or whatever.”
“It just shows you though, doesn’t it, that when you spend the money on a good player, an established player or a marquee player, as I call them, you normally get results,” David Seaman said.
Manchester United recent midfield signings
Hindsight is always 20/20, but it has to be said that Warnock has a point here.
Indeed, United just keep missing the mark with their recruitment, no matter what they try.
The Red Devils have tried almost everything in the midfield, from a young, promising talent from the continent – Donny van de Beek, to a tried and tested veteran in Casemiro.
United also went for a Premier League-proven option in Mason Mount, and that hasn’t worked out either
United even broke the world transfer record to sign Paul Pogba, and he had limited success at Old Trafford as well.
Almost every single one of these signings has backfired in one way or another, and it’s cost United hundreds of millions.
| Manchester United midfield signings in the last 10 years | Fee |
|---|---|
| Paul Pogba | £89m |
| Casemiro | £70m |
| Manuel Ugarte | £50m |
| Mason Mount | £55m |
| Donny van de Beek | £40m |
| Fred | £55m |
| Nemanja Matic | £40m |
| Morgan Schneiderlin | £24m |
| Bastian Schweinsteiger | £7m |
| Overall cost | £420m |
United seemingly just have some kind of mental block when it comes to identifying and signing the right players, and, ultimately, that’s why they’re 15th in the Premier League right now.
