Major Chelsea signing must regret his move after what happened in Nottingham Forest win

Chelsea took themselves within just two points of second place in the Premier League after beating Nottingham Forest 3-0 on Saturday afternoon – but the win will surely see one player regretting his move to Stamford Bridge.

The Blues had a solid start to the campaign by going unbeaten in their first four, but back-to-back losses against Manchester United and Brighton following red cards saw Chelsea take a hit.

That has changed with Estevao’s late winner over Liverpool and Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, and Enzo Maresca will be looking positively at the table given their wobble in September.

However, the introduction of Josh Acheampong as a starter in Chelsea’s back three saw him score his first goal for the club at the City Ground – and it has plunged Wesley Fofana further down the pecking order.

Wesley Fofana’s injury woes have ravaged his Chelsea spell

Chelsea beat Newcastle to Wesley Fofana in 2022 after some strong appearances for Leicester City, when he was just 21.

However, Fofana’s knee problem picked up against AC Milan in the Champions League set him off on a catalogue of injury woes. Fofana made 17 appearances in the Premier League in the 2022-23 season and didn’t feature at all the following campaign.

Although he began last season in solid form, a hamstring injury in early December and subsequent surgery meant he only played 14 games all season, seven of which resulted in him earning a yellow card.

This season hasn’t been much better. Fofana has started two Premier League games for Chelsea, being subbed off in both and a concussion means others have taken his space.

Other players such as Josh Acheampong featuring is only pushing Fofana down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge, especially when they’re scoring.

And, as a young defender tipped for greatness, Josh Acheampong’s winner for Chelsea against Nottingham Forest means he could have nailed down a long-term starting spot ahead of the Frenchman.

Wesley Fofana has become victim of Chelsea’s mass recruitment under BlueCo

It also won’t help Fofana’s case that there are plenty of centre-backs at Chelsea.

Not only is Acheampong bursting through the first-team picture, but a number of young, hungry stars are battling it out for a first-team spot after a huge influx of signings from BlueCo.

Chelsea’s signing of young Dutchman Jorrel Hato has added to their teenage contingent of defensive prodigies, whilst Trevoh Chalobah, Levi Colwill and Tosin Adarabioyo are all classed as home-grown, which gives them leverage in terms of squad registration.

Fellow French star Benoit Badiashile earned praise from Cesc Fabregas after he cost Chelsea £35million in 2023, and that isn’t a deal that the club will look to give up just yet, while youngsters Mamadou Sarr and Aaron Anselmino are also away on loan at present.

It’s a long road back for Fofana if he wants to cement a first-team spot on a consistent basis and he may well be regretting his move to Chelsea if he can’t find a way into the first-team.
