Football journalist Dean Jones has claimed that Leeds United are unlikely to sign Cody Gakpo this summer as they are more interested in bringing in a new striker.
Back in June, reports revealed that Leeds felt they could sign the talented Dutch attacker for a club-record fee. Gakpo himself admitted last month that Jesse Marsch’s side ‘got in touch’ with his agent to discuss a potential move.
Leeds are unlikely to sign Cody Gakpo
One of the biggest reasons why Gakpo is a wanted man this summer is his versatility. The 23-year-old is naturally a left-winger, but he is more than capable of playing through the middle and on the opposite side.
As good a trait as that is, Leeds are apparently looking for something else.
Jones has now claimed that the Whites want to sign an out-and-out striker this summer. They are much more likely to pursue that over making a move for Gakpo, who is reportedly valued at £40 million.
The journalist told GiveMeSport: “I’ve been told to expect that Leeds would sign a player that’s more likely to play through the middle as opposed to out wide.
“So, given that, I wouldn’t really be expecting Gakpo to land.”

TBR View:
Gakpo really is a fantastic player.
The Dutchman has three goals and two assists to his name in just four games already this season. He scored 21 and assisted 15 times last campaign as well, which shows just how good he is.
Leeds have been rivalling the likes of Arsenal for Gakpo’s signature this summer. Gunners scouts watched him in action and were reportedly reminded of Premier League legend Thierry Henry.
However, as good as Gakpo is, Leeds’ priority has to be a natural striker who will guarantee them goals this season.
