Report: 18-goal forward reminded Arsenal scouts of Thierry Henry, Edu's now plotting £33m summer move
Arsenal have been heavily linked with a move for PSV Eindhoven star Cody Gakpo over the last few weeks.
The Dutchman has been one of the best players in the Eredivisie this season. He has been incredible for PSV, having scored 18 goals and provided 15 assists in all competitions.
The Athletic revealed not too long ago that Mikel Arteta’s side are keen to sign the 22-year-old forward. The Gunners have sent their scouts to watch him play on numerous occasions and it looks like they really like him.
A report from Soccerlink in the Netherlands claims that Arsenal’s scouts were reminded of club legend Thierry Henry when they watched Gakpo against Ajax in the cup final last weekend.
Cody Gakpo reminded Arsenal scouts of Thierry Henry
The Dutch outlet writes: “Gakpo played an important role in the spectacle with a goal. Something that could undoubtedly please the scouts of the interested Arsenal. They saw the outline of a big, strong winger in the vein of Thierry Henry.
“Arsenal also seems to be the best option for the Dutch winger. The main reason for signing for Arsenal is not necessarily in the present: Arsenal are still rushing to find a player who can fill Thierry Henry’s huge boots.
“Gakpo is an incomparable player by Dutch standards, but in international football Henry has shown in the past that you don’t need lightning-fast legs to make the difference from the flanks.
“Gakpo’s height is similar, the playstyles have more than two similarities, but that devastating shot, choosing the moments and the way Gakpo manages to create space for himself (and his teammates), similar to the illustrious Arsenal predecessor.”
Edu could make a move this summer
The report from The Athletic claimed that Arsenal are accelerating their interest in Gakpo, while numerous other outlets have claimed that the Gunners are keen to sign him this summer as well.
Gakpo, after his truly sensational season in Holland, will be sold by PSV this summer, but only if their £33 million asking price is met.
That really shouldn’t be a problem for Edu, Arteta and Arsenal as they are gearing up for another big transfer window to further improve their already-impressive squad.
It will be interesting to see how this pans out this summer but if Arsenal scouts saw Henry in Gakpo, the Gunners just have to go all out to sign him before the start of next season.
