John Obi Mikel claims Chelsea star doesn’t even trust his own ability on the pitch

Chelsea legend John Obi Mikel has questioned one member of the current squad, claiming that they don’t even trust their own ability on the pitch.

Chelsea have had a mixed start to the season in all competitions, and that has been reflected in individual performances throughout the squad.

Joao Pedro and Estevao Willian have impressed with their performances throughout the season, but others have struggled.

Filip Jorgensen was criticised for his performance against Lincoln City, but Mikel is more interested in another player who has struggled this season.

John Obi Mikel doesn’t believe Robert Sanchez trusts himself in goal

Robert Sanchez has had difficulty adjusting to life at Chelsea from the moment he signed, as the goalkeeper made numerous individual errors last season.

Despite keeping three clean sheets already in the Premier League this season, Sanchez’s red card against Manchester United proved that those mistakes still exist within his game, which frustrates Mikel.

During his latest Obi One podcast, the former Chelsea midfielder shared his opinion on Sanchez, claiming that he doesn’t trust himself in goal.

“So, we know the way we playing with the team we have, we have the better team right now. We could go on to win the game. We could go on to win the game easily.

“So for him [Robert Sanchez] to make such a mistake, you know, you run out, you came out of your line, why don’t you just pedal back and try to make yourself big and defend the goal and try to make sure doesn’t score? I think it’s a matter of not trusting himself.

“Because if you trust yourself, a goalkeeper trust himself would have pedalled back and gone to his goal line and okay, let’s see what you’ve got. Try to beat me cuz I trust myself.

“I can bet on myself to, you know, to maybe defend the goal. But he just thought, you know what? I don’t trust myself. I have to go out and make a rational decision. It wasn’t a rational decision.

“Let him come face you face-to-face. You’re a goalkeeper. Make yourself big and try to make the save. But he was like, you know what? I didn’t trust myself here.

“So, he went out and made a rational decision, a decision that he didn’t need to make. So, for me, it was a stupid mistake to put your team in that situation.”

John Obi Mikel believes Chelsea should have bought Gianluigi Donnarumma

The goalkeeper was an area of the pitch that most Chelsea fans expected to be strengthened during the summer transfer window, but that never happened.

That doesn’t mean players weren’t available, though, as Manchester City signed Gianluigi Donnarumma, who has been impressive already in the Premier League.

Mikel believes Chelsea should have been in the market to sign the former PSG goalkeeper to improve the squad.

“And we talk about it, I’ve said it so many times. We should have brought in a top, top goalkeeper this transfer window. I know I keep saying it, keep talking about it, but we should have done it. We should have.

“Look at what Donnarumma is doing now at Manchester City, that was the goalkeeper we needed.

“I know a lot of people point to the wage structure as a reason. But there’s always a way around that. You could have found a way to fit a 26-year-old top, top goalkeeper into the structure. But we didn’t. And there’s no excuse for that.”
