Chelsea made to rue £25million sale as after one players 57-touch disaster against Lincoln

Chelsea have been made to rue one of their many summer sales after a disastrous individual performance against Lincoln City in the EFL Cup.

Enzo Maresca’s side barely sneaked through into the next round of the competition as they were made to fight from behind to earn a 2-1 victory away from home.

The Imps took a deserved lead in the first half after a loose pass from Enzo Fernandez set up a one-on-one situation, but the Blues fought back with two goals in the space of two minutes.

Tyrique George scored a stunning volley from outside the box, while Facundo Buonanotte scored his first goal for Chelsea, which turned out to be the match-winner.

While certain fringe players impressed for Chelsea, one individual ended up underwhelming people with his efforts.

Chelsea regret selling Djordje Petrovic to Bournemouth after Filip Jorgensen’s nightmare

Chelsea might have survived a scare against Lincoln, but Filip Jorgensen’s individual performance did little to help.

The 23-year-old is Chelsea’s second-choice goalkeeper, who was handed a start in the EFL Cup because Robert Sanchez was suspended following his red card against Manchester United at the weekend.

However, Jorgensen didn’t cover himself in glory. He lacked confidence when dealing with aerial balls into the box, and his overall performance didn’t put Chelsea fans at ease.

Jorgensen was backed by Maresca throughout the summer when he opted to sell Djordje Petrovic to Bournemouth for £25million, despite being the Player of the Year on loan at Strasbourg last season.

Petrovic has already proven that Chelsea might regret their decision to sell him because he’s already kept three clean sheets for the Cherries in their five opening Premier League games this season.

Robert Sanchez has struggled to impress as Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper

While Jorgensen didn’t stake a claim to the Chelsea number one shirt against Lincoln, Maresca’s first-choice option hasn’t done much better this season.

Many question marks surrounded Sanchez throughout the 2024-25 campaign due to his individual errors, and he’s yet to convince fans that he’s the right man for the job this season.

John Obi Mikel questioned why Chelsea didn’t sign Gianluigi Donnarumma during the summer transfer window after not being won over by Sanchez.

The former Brighton goalkeeper has conceded six goals this season and received one red card, adding further pressure on his future.
