Tottenham Hotspur star Lucas Moura has claimed that it’s very likely he will stay at Spurs beyond the end of this summer’s transfer window.

The Brazilian joined the North Londoners all the way back in January 2018. Spurs splashed £23 million for his signature (BBC), and although he hasn’t quite been the superstar many fans hoped he’d be, he has been a fine servant to the club over the last four years.

Lucas has played 201 games for Tottenham so far, and after starting just two league games in the last three months of the recently-concluded campaign, many felt there’s a chance he could leave the club.

However, the 29-year-old has all but confirmed that he’ll be staying at Tottenham this summer. But, he could walk away for free when his contract expires next year.

Lucas Moura says he will stay at Tottenham this summer

Speaking to Esporte Na Band, as translated by SportWitness. Lucas said: “Hardly anything will happen in this window. I will hardly leave Tottenham. Of course, we never know what will happen.

“But it’s very likely that I will stay, I already had a conversation with the club, they are interested in me staying. Even more so with the Champions League spot, so I feel very motivated for next season, to continue.

About returning to São Paulo one day, he said: It’s possible. Most likely. I don’t like to stick to anything, because we never know, and I don’t want to create false expectations either. But it’s very likely.

“As I said, contract to end. It could be a year, it could be two, depending on the club’s renewal. And at the end of the contract, when I am free, the possibility of returning to São Paulo is very high, very high. I always had this dream of returning to Tricolor.”

Tottenham’s front three is sorted with Son Heung-min, Harry Kane and Dejan Kulusevski. The three attackers are Antonio Conte’s undisputed first-choice starters, which makes life difficult for Lucas.

However, Spurs are absolutely right to keep hold of the Brazilian this summer.

Lucas, branded as ‘wonderful’ by Conte, has bags of experience under his belt having played over 550 games for club and country over the years. He knows what it takes to deliver in big Champions League games as well, which makes him a great player to have around the squad.

It really does look like Lucas will stay at Tottenham this summer, but his time at Spurs could well come to an end in a year’s time when his contract expires. A return to Sao Paulo will then be a serious possibility.
