Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has heaped praise on Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero and even compared him to Ricardo Carvalho.

The Argentine joined Spurs on loan from Atalanta at the start of this campaign. That move will be made permanent this summer, with Fabrizio Romano claiming today that Daniel Levy will invest a combined £67 million on Romero and Dejan Kulusevski before the start of next season.

Romero really impressed for Tottenham in the first few games of this term, but he suffered a terrible injury in November. He missed over two months of football as a result, and Spurs’ defence looked really poor in that period.

Since his return, however, Tottenham have mostly been brilliant at the back, and Carragher has been really impressed.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ broadcast of Monday Night Football yesterday, Carragher said: ” I really like him.

“Romero being in my position and I remember watching him at Man City and I thought there’s something special about him.

“Every time I watch him play he takes the ball and is aggressive.

“He reminds me of Carvalho at Chelsea. He’s not the biggest. He is clever and switched on, he’s streetwise. I think Tottenham have a real player there.”

Romero is a fantastic defender, there’s no doubt about that. Since the 24-year-old’s return from injury in February, Spurs have lost just five times in the Premier League, three of which came in his first four games back in action.

Tottenham are a much better side with the Argentine in the starting eleven, and although they’ve shown in their last two games that they can win without him, he is one of their most important players.

It’s unlikely that Romero will play again this season, but by the time he returns to full fitness, Tottenham will likely be a Champions League club again. That could bring out the best in him next season.
