Sadio Mane reportedly wants to leave Liverpool this summer and Paul Merson just can’t understand why.

The Senegal international has been at Anfield since 2016, and he has been a phenomenal player for the Reds. Mane has played a huge part in helping Liverpool win the Premier League and the Champions League, and he is one of their most important players.

Since after the Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid last week, multiple reports have revealed that Mane wants to leave Liverpool this summer. He wants a new challenge elsewhere, and Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich look like the favourites for his signature.

Merson has had his say on what Mane reportedly wants to do this summer, and the pundit is baffled.

Paul Merson cannot understand why Sadio Mane wants to leave Liverpool

In his weekly column on The Daily Star, Merson wrote about the £100,000-a-week man: “It seems clear Sadio Mane has his heart set on a move to Bayern Munich but I can’t for the life of me see why. The grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence and there are no guarantees that he will be as successful in Germany as he has been with Liverpool.

“Since his arrival from Southampton six years ago Liverpool have played a way that suits his game and goals could dry up in a different set-up and a different league. It is a brave move to make if he wants a fresh challenge and is backing himself to make a success of it.

“His relationship with Klopp and the club has been so good that the club will have known about this for a while and they will have been planning to recover and renew up front.

“There may still be a bit of wrangling to be done over the fee because at the £25 million which was talked about last week it ain’t going to happen. Add another £10 million on and, with just a year left on his deal, it might but I just don’t know why he wants to leave Liverpool in the first place.”

Well, if you’re at one of the best clubs in the world like Liverpool and are competing for the biggest trophies year after year, why would you want to leave? You can’t blame Merson for questioning Mane here.

The Senegal international has had a tremendous season at Liverpool. He has been brilliant, and even though Mo Salah received a ton of plaudits for his goals, Mane’s performances since the turn of the year cannot be ignored.

Mane will enter the final year of his contract soon, and this is his last chance to get a big move elsewhere. That may probably be why he’s pushing to join Bayern Munich, who are also an elite club like Liverpool.

It will be interesting to how this pans out, but it really does look like Mane has made up his mind.
