How £38.5m Chelsea player has just inadvertently stopped Marc Guehi joining Liverpool

Liverpool will no longer be signing Marc Guehi on deadline day after Crystal Palace pulled the plug on the deal.

The Reds agreed a £35m fee for Guehi, but reports scattered throughout the day suggested that the transfer would only be completed once Palace had acquired a replacement.

Guehi even underwent a medical in London to ensure that his move to Anfield would not suffer any more complications, but now the deal is dead in the water.

While Liverpool fans can look forward to the impending announcement of Alexander Isak signing for the Reds, the dramatic U-turn in the Guehi saga will leave many supporters feeling deflated.

And all of the drama could have been easily avoided, as one transfer decision made away from Anfield and Selhurst Park earlier on deadline day ultimately decided Guehi’s fate.

Axel Disasi decision forced Marc Guehi transfer to collapse

Alex Crook revealed live on talkSPORT that Axel Disasi will not be leaving Chelsea for West Ham United – the Frenchman was also on Aston Villa’s radar, but his decision ultimately set off a transfer domino effect.

“We were speaking about Axel Disasi potentially leaving Chelsea for West Ham United. That deal is off.

“Disasi, as I understand it, wasn’t keen to make that move across London after all, he stays at Chelsea. You wonder how many minutes he is going to get in the Premier League between now and January.”

The 27-year-old arrived at Stamford Bridge in a £38.5m deal from Monaco but has found himself surplus to requirements in West London.

A direct consequence of Disasi’s decision meant Igor Julio’s move to Crystal Palace collapsed, with the Brighton defender opting for a move to the London Stadium.

And therefore, the Eagles were backed into a corner and forced to deny Guehi his move to Liverpool with little time to seek an alternative replacement.

The Reds, of course, signed Giovanni Leoni to bolster their defensive ranks, but after Arne Slot’s side conceded four goals in their opening two Premier League fixtures, the need for further reinforcements was clear.

Nevertheless, Guehi can still become a Liverpool player upon the expiry of his contract at Selhurst Park, which runs out at the end of the season, but in the end, the English champions simply left their move too late.

Liverpool should have offered Joe Gomez to Crystal Palace

Furthermore, Liverpool could have secured Guehi on deadline day had they agreed to include Joe Gomez in a potential transfer.

Palace asked for Gomez on loan as makeweight in the deal, but the Reds refused and thwarted any interest in the Englishman’s signature, including from AC Milan.

Considering Slot has two players in each defensive position in his squad, it is unfathomable that Liverpool’s decision to reject Palace’s request has led to Guehi remaining at Selhurst Park.

Indeed, Disasi rejecting West Ham certainly set off a domino effect, but the Reds left their transfer in the hands of others when they could have made a decision that would have benefited all parties.
