Kai Havertz endured another difficult evening as Germany suffered another defeat on Tuesday, with the Arsenal star struggling to create much of note during the game.
It has been an interesting international break for Kai Havertz. Few would have expected the 24-year-old to start both games in the left wing-back role.
Unfortunately, Havertz did not have the best game against Turkey. Nevertheless, he kept his place for Tuesday’s friendly against Austria.
Kai Havertz struggles as Germany are beaten again
It proved to be another disappointing night for Julian Nagelsmann’s side as they were beaten 2-0 by Austria. The result was somewhat overshadowed by the red card given to Leroy Sane after a nasty challenge and then shove to the face of Phillipp Mwene.

In truth, none of the Germany players emerged from either game with much credit. But Sport 1 handed Havertz a 4/10 rating, noting that he struggled to get into the contest.
“Was committed to another unusual position just at the beginning and appeared a few times in the last third, but then dismounted. Even in passage two, when he moved forward to Sané’s red card, little came from Havertz,” they wrote.
Not the international break Arsenal star needed
Havertz was involved in one good move, setting up Sane on the other side of the box. Unfortunately for the visitors, Sane’s strike hardly tested the goalkeeper.
But it was not the international break Havertz arguably needed. Even the most optimistic Arsenal fan could hardly argue that he has vindicated Mikel Arteta’s decision to sign him in the summer and make him the club’s highest paid player.
He has only scored one goal and provided one assist. Admittedly, Havertz did well to set up the winner against Manchester City. But his only goal came from the penalty spot.
There is obviously still time for him to come good. However, Havertz appears to be playing with little confidence right now.
And the search for his best position – for club and country – continues.
