Tottenham Hotspur are about to sign Djed Spence from Middlesbrough, claims Fabrizio Romano.

Spurs have been on the lookout for a new right-wing-back for a few months now. Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty just weren’t up to the mark, and Spence has been viewed for a long time as the perfect upgrade.

Fabrizio Romano says ‘here we go’ on Djed Spence to Tottenham deal

It was revealed yesterday evening that Tottenham are on the verge of signing Spence after Daniel Levy managed to find a solution with his Boro counterpart, Steve Gibson.

Now, Romano has shared a few more details on the deal, and if his numbers are right, Spurs really have secured a humongous bargain.

The Italian journalist revealed in his tweet that Spurs will be paying an initial fee of just £12.5 million for Spence, which is half of what they paid for Emerson Royal a year ago.

Potential future add-ons could take the fee closer to the £20 million mark, which is still excellent value for a player as talented as the Englishman.

Daniel Levy deserves immense credit

Levy is often criticised by Tottenham fans for the way he handles business, and some of the criticism he gets is arguably justified.

However, it’s time for Spurs fans to give him credit for the way he has pulled this deal off.

Spence was wanted by a number of clubs in the Premier League this summer. After weeks and weeks of negotiations, it really did look like one of those deals for Spurs, but to get it over the line almost three weeks before the start of the new season for an initial fee as low as £12.5 million is incredible business.

Spence is scheduled to undergo his medical tests and an announcement about his new signing should be made very soon.
