‘Doesn’t have a future’…£20m Tottenham player could have played his last game for the club

Tottenham managed to get Genoa to take Djed Spence off their hands this month and it could be the last we see of him for a while.

Spence returned from an unsuccessful loan spell with Leeds and was then quickly farmed out to the Italian club by Spurs, as they completed their own deal for Radu Dragusin.

Spence, a £20m signing from Middlesbrough, has struggled ever since he signed. Antonio Conte refused to play him and since then, question marks over attitude and lateness have persisted.

And according to Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge, Spence’s Tottenham career is as good as over as things stand at the moment.

Djed Spence doesn’t have Tottenham future

Speaking about Spence for GiveMeSport, Bridge conceded that Spence is effectively done at Spurs and that overall, the club are delighted to get him the move they did.

“Unless things change, Spence doesn’t have a future at Tottenham. I think we can say that quite clearly. But, credit him if he’s been persuaded to go to Genoa. Many players might want to sit on their backsides, stay in London, and wait until the summer. At least he’s making the effort to try something else. It’s not easy to go to Genoa. So, I’m sure Spurs wish him all the best, and I think they’ve done well to get this deal,” Bridge said.

Time to prove himself

There’s an argument to suggest Spence hasn’t really had a chance to prove himself at Tottenham a first-team level.

However, the fact two top managers in Conte and now Ange Postecoglou have opted not to go with him, coupled by rumblings coming out of Leeds about lateness and other issues, suggests there’s more at play here.

For Spence, this move to Genoa is a chance for him to show what he can do. We all know there is a top player in there somewhere, it’s just about getting that out of him.

Ultimately, the off-field stuff is down to Spence to sort out. There is no reason to be late as a footballer, consistently anyway.

This move to Italy could make or break Spence. Hopefully, for everyone, it is the making of him.
