‘There were issues’… Phil Hay shares one thing Djed Spence would do at Leeds that caused problems

Djed Spence’s Leeds loan was terminated earlier this month to the shock of many.

The full-back was seen as something of a coup for Leeds when he arrived on loan at Elland Road from Tottenham this summer, but, for one reason or another, things didn’t work out.

There had been some suggestions that Daniel Farke took issue with Spence’s lack of professionalism at Leeds, and it sounds as though there may be some basis to those rumours.

Indeed, speaking on The Square Ball Podcast, Phil Hay has touched on the Spence situation, and he says that there were indeed issues with lateness when he was at Leeds.

Spence had lateness issues that caused problems

Hay shared what he knows about the defender.

“Farke was careful not to throw him completely under the bus, but the biggest issue for Farke were the performance levels it just wasn’t quite right, it wasn’t what he’s looking for, there were issues with lateness and things like that and in the end it made more sense for Leeds to send him back,” Hay said.

So simple

Being on time is the easiest thing in the world, and lateness in football can’t be excused.

Any player who is late is usually punished, and for good reason.

These players are being paid thousands of pounds a week to do a job that they love, and some can’t even have the courtesy to show up on time.

It’s such a simple thing to ask of a player, and if lateness is a persistant issue, it tells you a lot about a player’s attitude.

Spence needs to get his act together if he wants to fulfil his potential, because being sent back from a loan in the Championship just isn’t a good look.

Hopefully he heeds this warning and knuckles down during his time at Genoa and potentially finds a way to get back into the mix at Tottenham.
