Club shocked 'electric' player hasn't signed new contract, after claims Tottenham want him - journalist

Journalist Graeme Bailey claims AC Milan are shocked that Rafael Leao hasn’t signed a new contract yet, after claims Tottenham Hotspur want to sign him.

Leao has been putting in some eye-catching performances for Milan over the past two years and it’s led to a host of elite clubs tracking his progress.

The 23-year-old has already netted seven times and provided nine assists in just 20 appearances for Stefano Pioli’s men this season.

Calciomercato.it reported last month that Spurs are one of the sides interested in signing Leao

The Portuguese forward has just over 18-months left on his current deal and Milan are clearly desperate for him to put pen to paper. But the ‘electric’ Leao hasn’t officially signed a new deal yet.

90 Min’s Bailey has told Team Talk that Chelsea are also pushing to sign Leao and Milan were expecting him to have signed a new deal by now.

“Rafael Leao is another who Chelsea are pushing hard for,” Bailey said.

“AC Milan are desperate for Leao to sign a new long-term deal and are willing to make him the highest paid player in Serie A.

“But as it stands, he has not signed and they thought that would be done before the World Cup finals. We need to keep an eye on the Leao situation.”

Spurs are in need of bolstering Antonio Conte’s attacking options, despite signing Richarlison over the summer.

Injuries to the Brazilian, Heung-Min Son and Dejan Kulusevski over the past two months have highlighted their need for more quality cover.

Lucas Moura’s deal is set to run until next summer and he hasn’t particularly impressed since his return from injury.

Bryan Gil has impressed during his cameo displays in the Champions League but he doesn’t seem to be up to the required standard as far as Conte is concerned.

Leao would represent a brilliant addition for Spurs and would certainly push for a starting role across the front-three.

Spurs aren’t known for battling it out with other big clubs for signings and with a host of elite sides apparently interested in Leao, it seems an unlikely move at this moment in time.
