Fabrizio Romano has told Que Golazo that AC Milan are in a ‘dangerous’ position over Rafael Leao’s contract, after claims Tottenham Hotspur want to sign him.

Calciomercatio. It reported last week that Spurs are one of the sides interested in signing Leao amid speculation over his future in Milan.

The 23-year-old has made a huge impact in Italy since making the switch from LOSC Lille in 2019.

He’s taken his game to another level over the past couple of seasons and was directly involved in 21 goals in Serie A during the last campaign. The Portuguese forward helped Milan to recapture the Scudetto and it’s no surprise that he’s attracting interest from top clubs.

Now, Romano claims that the Rossoneri are in a dangerous position with the player’s contract set to expire in 2024. But the Italian champions are still confident he will renew.

Milan in ‘dangerous’ position over Leao contract

Speaking on Que Golazo, Romano provided an update on Leao’s contract situation at AC Milan.

The transfer insider said the situation is open but Milan are in a slightly dangerous position.

He said: “It’s not an easy negotiation because Rafael Leao is something special. He was the best player in Serie A last season and I have a feeling it’ll happen the same this season because he’s doing great.

“We have to respect Milan’s position because at the same time Paolo Maldini once again said we are negotiating with Rafael Leao and want to extend his contract. The current deal expires in June 2024, so it’s kind of a dangerous situation because Milan can’t wait too long before trying to reach an agreement with Rafa.

“Milan have already lost many players on a free, [Gianluigi] Donnarumma, Franck Kessie, [Hakan] Calhanoglu. Many players have left on a free, so they have to be careful with this situation.

“But at the same time, they are convinced the player knows that maybe one more season with Milan could be the best way for him to go to a top, top level.

“So, negotiations are ongoing but it’s not close to being agreed or completed – still at the early stages of negotiations. Let’s see what happens because it’s still open.”

Romano also spoke about Chelsea’s interest in Leao and claims they made a verbal proposal to Milan over the summer. But with time running down on the forward’s contract, Romano says the situation remains open.

He added: ”Let’s see what’s next, my feeling is everything is open for Leao and Milan will try until the end to extend his contract.”

If Leao doesn’t renew with Milan, there’s no doubt that there will be a host of top clubs in for him.

Spurs are not exactly known for securing marquee signings and still have some work to do under Antonio Conte to reach that level.
