Benni McCarthy says what people around Marcus Rashford are getting totally wrong at the minute

Marcus Rashford hasn’t had the best 12 months in football.

The Manchester United star has lost his place in the England team, and his form for his club hasn’t been great.

Rashford has come under heavy criticism as of late, but, as ever, there may be more to this story than meets the eye.

The attacker has been vocal about the pressure he feels playing for Manchester United, while some of his decisions away from football have been questioned in the wider media.

Speaking to SuperSport, Benni McCarthy has been discussing his time with Rashford when he a coach at Manchester United under Erik ten Hag.

McCarthy hailed Rashford as a player, describing him as ‘special’, but he did question some aspects of how the attacker is being handled.

Benni McCarthy delivers Marcus Rashford verdict

McCarthy was very honest with his comments on Rashford, claiming that while he loves the attacker as a player and as a person, his support network isn’t the greatest.

Indeed, McCarthy says that Rashford is surrounded by too many people who just tell him what he wants to hear, and that he needs more people in his life who are willing to be honest with him.

“Obviously Rashy is special, a special player and a special human being. He’s Man United through and through, McCarthy said.

“With me, with me it wasn’t ‘oh Rashy’ it was ‘Marcus’ with me I was straight to the point and he respected that. Instead of sweet-talking him because I need him to score so the team wins for other reasons.

“I was a straight shooter, and I don’t think he has enough people in his life who are straight with him because everyone tells him what he needs to hear and what he wants to hear, but I was normal and I think he appreciated that.”

Why has Rashford been criticised?

As McCarthy says, Rashford perhaps doesn’t have the best influences around him, and that showed last season.

Rashford held an infamous birthday party just after a Manchester derby defeat last season, while he missed training at one point after being pictured on a night out in Belfast just days prior.

Chris Sutton was very critical of Rashford’s conduct last season, while Ally McCoist wasn’t happy with his body language at one point.

“I just think Marcus Rashford is like a good few Manchester United players at this time and I think he thinks he’s untouchable. His behaviour in the week, it hasn’t been the first time where’s he’s had a misdemeanour, it’s been continuous,” Sutton said.

“He has no respect for the manager. No respect for his teammates and that’s the bottom line. He’s probably thinking he’s going to outlast Ten Hag but, he’s out of control as far as I can see.”

McCarthy reckons that the people around Rashford aren’t necessarily helping him, and given his form over the past 12 months, it’s hard to disagree.
